This is the bullfight Hardcover – January 1, by John Leibold (Author)Author: John Leibold. One would think a book called “On Bullfighting” would be written by someone knowledgeable about bullfighting.

Not the case here. This book is a pathetic combination of a third rate book report on Hemingway’s Death in the Afternoon and a therapy journal cataloging a depressed Scots woman’s struggles with back pain/5(32).

"Death in the Afternoon" is a non fiction account of bullfighting in Spain by Ernest Hemingway. The book combines a detailed, sometimes painful, account of bullfighting with the classic Hemingway writing by: An Anchor Books Original One day, on the brink of despair and contemplating her own mortality, novelist A.

This book was a respectable yet not exactly remarkable 4-star affair, up until the thirty or so pages which described the fight itself.

That deceptively diminutive section comprised perhaps the most electrifying, intense, transcendent fight writing I’ve ever encountered/5. The Bullfight (La Corrida) is an oil on canvas painting by Édouard Manet, now in the Frick Collection in New York. Its dimensions are 48xcm. Bullfighting has been called Spain's favorite sport. But to call it this is wrong for two reasons: first, soccer (called fútbol in Spain) is the most popular sport; and second, bullfighting cannot really be called a sport.

It should be called, more properly, a spectacle, an exhibition, or a performance, like a ballet. Ernest Hemingway said of it in his non-fiction book Death in the Afternoon: "Bullfighting is the only art in which the artist is in danger of death and in which the degree of brilliance in the performance is left to the fighter's honor.".
